Staff members of Qatar’s state-run broadcaster al Jazeera have quit their jobs over the channel’s “biased coverage” of events unfolding in Egypt, a former employee says.
According to former Al Jazeera news producer Hamed Mahmoud, the staff members were given specific orders on how to cover events in Egypt, as well as Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar.
“In addition, like other resigned colleagues said before, such as Fatemah Nabil, they had to focus on specific incidents and figures. They were not allowed to criticize some leaders.”
Mahmoud added that he and his former colleagues had on numerous occasions, posed questions regarding the angle they were ordered to report a specific incident.
“Unfortunately, we were not convinced by their answers of finding a solution for such a problem.”
Back in March, a number of Al Jazeera employees resigned, accusing the network of failing to properly cover events taking place in the Middle East.
Al-Jazeera has been accused of blowing the opposition movement in Syria out of proportion and covering up the truth in the country.
The network has also been criticized for its silence on Bahrain’s brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters.
It has been accused of fabricating stories about Libya and Syria and even staging its own footage at undisclosed locations. Al-Jazeera is also said to be forcing editors to give the stories a twist to benefit the state of Qatar's political views.
It is widely believed that the Emir of Qatar has a direct influence on the nature of Al-Jazeera programs.
