Jul 15: PAS said a deliberate policy to keep masses in poverty had been Barisan Nasional's strategy to ensure loyalty from voters as it distributed goodies every election season.According to PAS secretary general Mustafa Ali, through the policy, the BN government had 'tied' voters to the party.
“It is as if poverty is an asset to BN, so that the masses and voters would be stuck with BN," said Mustafa, speaking at a gathering in Kuala Besut where voters will go to the polls on July 24.
The Terengganu state seat fell vacant after the death of its BN incumbent, opening the possibility for a hung state assembly should PAS manage to win this time.
Mustafa, a veteran Terengganu PAS leader, said the 'politics of dependency' being encouraged by BN was destructive to society, and said such a tactic had ensured a constituency such as Kuala Besut to be left out in terms of development.
He recalled that things remained the same in Kuala Besut since 1979 when it last had a by-election.
Mustafa expressed hope that a 16-16 seat status between BN and PR in the event of a PAS victory on July 24 would have major impact favouring the people.
