
He said the 2009 by-election for the parliamentary constituency of Kuala Terengganu, in which he defeated BN by 2,631 votes barely a year after the 2008 general election, showed that the electorate could swing in a short period.
Wahid however said it was critical that PAS worked hard to increase its votes this time, and called on all party machinery in the constituency to be mobilised for the impending by-election.
The by-election in Kuala Besut will be keenly followed as it could decide the fate of the current state government, which has a one-seat majority following Rahman's demise.
Some analysts agree that a 16-16 split of state seats as a result of PAS winning in Kuala Besut, resulting in a hung state assembly, would likely force fresh state polls, although there are other mechanisms in choosing a state government in such an event.
Wahid meanwhile said PAS had only won twice in Kuala Besut, but said a third victory was possible.
"It is not impossible for a third victory. And this is not unique to Kuala Besut, but also in other state constituencies," he added.
In the May 5 general election, the late Rahman defeated PAS's Napisah Ismail by a majority of 2,434 votes.
