Hunt is finally on for rogue senior cop in Dharmendran murder

Jul 16: Hours after a rights group which has been spearheading the case involving custodial death victim N Dharmendran accused the police of not being serious in nabbing a fugitive senior cop, the police today finally revealed his identity.

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today released a photograph of Inspector Hare Krishnan K Subramaniam who has been absent from work since June 15.

Lawyers for Libery had earlier rapped the police for withholding the Hare Krishna's identity, saying the absence of manhunt or public alerts for him showed the police's  "lackadaisical" attitude.

Darmendran died last May after being detained for 10 days at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters, with his body showing signs of torture including his ears stapled.

Following public pressure, three police officers Sergeant Jaffri Jaafar, Corporal Mohd Nahar Abdul Rahman and Corporal Mohd Haswadi Zamri Shaari were charged for murder on June 5, 2013.

LFL urged the Malaysian police to take a leaf out of the Singapore police's recent manner in investigating a gruesome double murder involving a cop.

The incident led to a public apology from the Singapore police commissioner, in which he said "the public’s trust in the police is the only reason they are able to keep Singapore as safe as it is".

"The PDRM are well advised to emulate their counterpart’s attitude in Singapore by taking crimes committed by their officers more seriously and addressing the public’s lack of trust and confidence rather than playing down or covering up crimes perpetrated by one of their own," said LFL adviser Eric Paulsen, in reference to initial attempt by the police to play down Dharmendran's death.
