Pakistani Taliban “establish” a cell in Syria

What is the truth about the Pakistani Taliban setting up a cell in Syria to help the faltering rebel forces? Some Taliban spokesmen claim their fighters have gone to Syria, others deny it. Even the Pakistan foreign office has denied the report saying their embassy in Damascus had received no complaint from the Syrian authorities. But Pakistani and Afghan fighters have been going to Syria via Beirut for more than a year now.

The Syria battleground illustrates the global forces of war at work to destabilize the Iran-Hizbullah-Syria axis. Recent reports have revealed that the Pakistani Taliban have opened up a cell in Syria, contributing to NATO’s effort to destabilize Bashar al-Asad’s government. According to Pakistani newspaper reports, the operational commander of Al-Qaeda in Lebanon-Syria and its affiliate in Iraq titled the Islamic State in Iraq has requested the Pakistani Taliban to join the Syrian proxy war on behalf of the US-EU-Israel-Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries.

The report went on: “A close associate of Taliban Amir (Chief) Hakeemullah Mehsud, confirming establishment of the Syrian base, said the TTP [Tehrike-e Taliban Pakistan] fighters had been sent upon the request of al Qaeda's operational commander in Syria, Abu Omar Baghdadi. He said Baghdadi had requested the Pakistani Taliban “to be part of a global jihad against the tyrant Syrian regime and we have agreed to send the fighters.” The aide, who did not wish to be named, said: “Yes, the TTP has a global agenda of fighting jihad against the infidels and this movement of sending fighters is part of that spirit.”

Other news sites have confirmed the Pakistani news story. The BBC reported that the Pakistani Taliban sent 12 “experts in warfare and information technology” to Syria in the past two months to aid Syrian rebel army, while the base was established in Syria six months ago. The BBC interviewed Mohammad Amin, the Taliban’s coordinator in Syria. “He [Amin] said that the cell has the approval of militant factions both within and outside” of Pakistan’s Taliban, reported the BBC.

The Afghan Taliban that have opened an office in Doha, Qatar, and which is said to be in talks with the United States, have meanwhile gone on a public relations offensive to refute these news sources. Taliban sources admitted that “some militants”, mainly Arabs and Central Asians, had gone to fight the forces of President Bashar al-Asad, but a senior leader dismissed reports of them setting up camps in Syria. The commander of the TTP declared: “There is no reality in these reports, we have far better targets in the region, NATO troops headed by the Americans are present in Afghanistan.” He went on: “We support the mujahideen's struggle in Syria but in our opinion, we have a lot more to do here in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he said, speaking anonymously.

However, another commander in Tehreek-e-Taliban, Abdul Rashid Abbasi, has confirmed the reports. Speaking to a reporter from the Karachi daily, Dawn, he confirmed that “another batch of 120 to 150 fighters is on its way from different routes and will reach Syrian cities this week to join the force.” He went on: “We shall be sending more volunteers, but can not give the exact numbers at this moment. We will provide whatever support is needed by our Syrian brothers,” Abbasi remarked.

This shows that the US has mobilized its militias—the Taliban being a US-Saudi-Pakistani project dating from the Cold War—across its satrapies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other regions, in order to take down the government in Syria.

The Pakistani foreign office spokesman also denied any Pakistani Taliban going to Syria. One wonders how he would know since the Taliban would not travel using documents under their own names; they certainly have facilities to use forged documents with help from certain segments of the Pakistani establishment. Other observers say the Taliban announcement is merely a publicity stunt.

Since the mayhem in Syria erupted in March 2011, Pakistanis and Afghans have traveled in significant numbers to Beirut via Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In Beirut, they are housed in apartment buildings purchased by the Saudis and Qataris before being launched into Syria. According to the Lebanese authorities, these mercenaries have created a serious security problem for Lebanon.
