“Politically, it’s not helping when it’s made too much of a fuss, because it fits the Malay right-wing argument that the Chinese and non-Malays refuse to understand and look down on everything Islam,” Rafizi Ramli(pic) told the Malay Mail Online.
Several MCA and DAP leaders have come out opposing the move to make TITAS compulsory effective this September, with MCA even invoking the Federal Constitution to state the Chinese-only party's displeasure.
According to MCA vice president Gan Ping Sieu, there should also be subjects on "Judeo-Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist civilisations from the West, India and China".
Even worse, MCA publicity chief Heng Seai Kie said the subject could incite religious tension in Malaysia.
But Rafizi chided critics, saying there was no limit to learning.
“I don’t think learning about Islamic civilisation is wrong,” he said. “People may argue that enough is being put in secondary school, but there’s no limit to knowledge.”
