Nov 8: PAS Legal and Human Rights Department (JUHAM) deputy chairperson II Ahmad Zamri Asa'ad Khuzaimi urged the authorities to launch a thorough probe on allegations levelled against Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail as revealed by news portal Malaysiakini.
Malaysiakini had revealed a high-level meeting had been held between former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, and several former top officers claiming to have discussed on Gani’s alleged misconduct, including his alleged role in Batu Puteh blunder.
“With the expose about the meeting, it looks like AG is facing a trial by the media on all the allegations levelled against him. For the record, PAS and other parties have earlier raised questions on Gani’s actions and behaviour in carrying out his duty as AG,” said Zamri in a statement.
Zamri said the power bestowed to AG under Article 145 (3) of Federal Constitution is too wide that he alleged Gani might have utilised the power to initiate a criminal charges for certain interests.
“Pakatan Rakyat leaders are victims to the selective prosecution by Gani. While extremist groups like Perkasa and others that are close to UMNO-BN are immune from legal actions although they frequently raise sensitive issues on races and religion,” explained Zamri.
He added that media expose on the meeting was merely to apply pressure on Gani and Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Regardless whether it was a plot by Mahathir as alleged, Zamri said a thorough investigation must be launched in Gani by referring to the various reports lodged with various authorities against the latter.
Zamri said the country could not have an AG with integrity in question. Should the allegations on Gani proved valid; a tribunal should be formed under Article 145 (6) and Article 125 of the federal constitution to look into the matter.
