Jul 17: The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism ministry has been urged to announce ceiling price for chicken by Friday amid rising poultry price.
PAS vice president and Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar said poultry price must not exceed RM6.80 a kilogramme, the previous ceiling price.
“The government is already aware that price of chicken goes up every festive season, and as such the government should be taking early measures to counter this (price hike),” he said.
Mahfuz said the government must also reveal the thirty companies which have been awarded permits for poultry import.
“It is feared that among the 30 companies, some are poultry suppliers making profit upon profits and therefore burden consumers,” he added.
He proposed that the government appoint Federal Agriculture and Marketing Authority (FAMA) as the supplier to help the small businesses and consumers.
Last week, poultry price shot from RM6.30 per kg to RM9.00 per kg in the northern region of Malaysia.
This prompted a controversial reaction from Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism minister Hasan Malek, who said people should stop eating chicken if they could not afford it during the upcoming festive season.
