KEMAMAN:  ZULKIFLI Ngah had hoped   there would be a way to let his 2-year-old conjoined twin daughters to be separated. However, they died yesterday and he accepted it as fate. 

He said Nur Shazwanie and Nur Shazrinie died from a heart complication in Kemaman Hospital. They were admitted on Friday.

"I feel as though my life has been taken away. They had learnt to call me and my wife 'daddy' and 'mummy'."

Zulkifli, 43, said the twins were admitted because of fever and breathing difficulty. They failed to recover.

Zulkifli said he had contacted the specialist from the National Heart Institute, who had treated his daughters after learning they had heart complications.

"The doctor who had treated them when they were 4-month-old said they could only live about 2 years to 30 months."

The twins were buried at Kampung Bukit Kuang Muslim cemetery at 2pm yesterday.

‘Miraculous’ escape for family after lorry crashes into car

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 — It was an incident that policeman Ruslan Yunus hopes to quickly forget.

Ruslan, 35, and his family were travelling in their car along the Butterworth-Ipoh federal route when a two-tonne trailer suddenly went out of control and crashed, resulting in its container falling on his Proton Wira on Monday night.

However, Ruslan, his wife Azmila Awang, 34, and six-year-old son Iskandar escaped with only minor cuts and bruises in the 8.45pm incident.

“I thank God for saving us. It is a miracle that we survived the incident. It was really scary,” Ruslan said.

“There was a loud noise when the container fell on my car. The car roof pressed on our heads. Luckily my son was seated at the back and he was unhurt.”

Ruslan said he and his wife were shaken over the incident. They were, however, relieved and thankful to those who had rescued their son from the wreckage.

Fireman struggled for more than 20 minutes to remove the 40-foot empty container, weighing one tonne that landed on the car to rescue Ruslan and Azmila.

Members of public had earlier managed to pull Iskandar to safety by breaking the car’s right rear door window.

The trio were taken to the Sungai Bakap Hospital and warded. Iskandar was discharged on Monday night while Ruslan was discharged yesterday morning. Azmila remains warded.

South Seberang Prai district police chief Supt Shafien Mamat said the trailer skidded several metres after hitting a milestone. The driver of the trailer had earlier tried to avoid hitting a car that came into its lane from a junction on the left.

“The trailer fell on its right while the empty container fell onto Ruslan’s car that was behind the trailer,” Shafien said.

The trailer from Nibong Tebal was heading towards Sungai Bakap.

The 51-year-old trailer driver escaped unhurt. He lodged a report at the district police headquarters in Jawi immediately after the incident.

Police are investigating the case under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Villagers block roads to Baram dam site, want heavy machinery removed

A group of native villagers who have been protesting against the Baram dam today demanded that Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) keep its word and remove the heavy machinery at the dam site now that the three-week grace period has lapsed.

Peter Kallang, chairman of non-governmental organisation Save Sarawak Rivers (SAVE), said six natives from among the hundreds of villagers who blocked the access road leading to the dam site, handed the letter to SEB.

SAVE is a grassroots network of indigenous communities and civil society organisations in Sarawak whose main aims are to protect the human rights of the indigenous people and to stop the construction of the dams the Sarawak government plans to build.

“The natives wanted them to remove the machines when it was first brought in on October 23 but the representative said it cannot be done due to logistic issues. They asked to be given three weeks to arrange for transportation and logistics to remove the machines from the site,” he said.

“The natives wanted to tell the company that if they failed to remove the heavy machinery, the villagers should not be held responsible if anything should happen to them,” he said.

On another matter, Kallang said Penan villagers who were affected by the RM4 billion Murum Dam project will lodge a police report on drunk police personnel who had tried to “provoke” them.

Since September 23, police have arrested 10 villagers including two small children over the Baram Dam protest.

“Police should be professional and fair in carrying out their duty and not as a tool to harass the people,” said Kallang.

About 1,500 people have been displaced by the dam project. About 200 Penan, including women and children, are taking turns to camp out in the open to press their demands for fair compensation.

It is understood that the Penan people were promised RM500,000 for each family affected, a plot of land and some other perks when the dam becomes operational.

"However, they were later told that the government would only offer each family or household RM4,000 to move out and RM800 monthly allowance for four years,” said Kallang.

The Murum project is part of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) plan, which aims to multiply Borneo's cheap power supply by nearly 20-fold to draw in power-guzzling industries such as aluminium smelters and other factories.

Swiss-based Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) recently claimed that companies associated with Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, like construction conglomerate Cahaya Mata Sarawak, are likely to be the main beneficiaries of public contracts in SCORE.

BMF recently criticised the state government after disclosing that SEB had awarded a contract worth RM618.6 million to develop transmission lines in the state to a company linked to Taib's eldest son, Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib.

Trenergy Infrastructure Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Sarawak Cable Bhd (SCB), won the contract.

BMF said company documents showed that Bekir is chairman of SCB and is its second-largest shareholder with a 33% stake in the company. - November 12, 2013.

Rejuvenation is key, says Ambiga on giving up Bersih co-chair

“Bersih 2.0 is all for change and rejuvenation, and people should not stay in power forever,” said the outgoing co-chair of the electoral watchdog steering committee, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Speaking to The Malaysian Insider in a phone interview soon after the Bersih Election Committee announced its first-ever elections for a new steering committee slated for the end of this month, Ambiga, who has been synonymous with the movement for free and fair elections, admitted to a tinge of sadness at relinquishing her position.

"But there is more joy knowing that Bersih has inspired good people to lead it. It is in good hands. Rejuvenation is key," she said.

Stressing that she would continue her advocacy work with Bersih 2.0, she revealed that she and co-chair Datuk A. Samad Said, who took on the posts in 2010, have been prepared for this for a while now.

"Three years is long enough. We must give new leaders a chance. And remember these are voluntary positions.

"Bersih was never about me or Pak Samad, it is bigger than any individual," she pointed out.

Ambiga also expressed confidence in all those nominated for the posts of vice-chair, treasurer and committee members in the upcoming elections.

"And I want to congratulate Maria, she will make a great leader," Ambiga said, referring to Maria Chin Abdullah who will assume the chairperson post as she was the only person nominated.

Ambiga, a prominent lawyer, also paid tribute to Samad, whom she called a true hero.

"It was my honour to have led Bersih and a greater honour to have led it with my hero Pak Samad.

"He is a true Malaysian who used his talent to help fellow Malaysians no matter the consequences to him personally. Truly, this country could do with more leaders like him," she added.

Meanwhile, Samad said that he did “what was necessary as co-chair”, adding that “most of the time, it was Ambiga doing the job”.

"I do not know how much I have done, but I think I did alright.

"I was there when anything happened, especially when it was about race," he added, speaking slowly.

Samad said that he had never been in an organisation like Bersih before this, which he described as “harder” than being in the literary organisations he was used to.

"Literary is very simple, but Bersih was difficult, so I'm happy to have been part of it because I've learnt a lot," he added.

When asked if he would also be participating in future Bersih events, Samad paused before saying: "I have no answer for that. I will be 82 next year, so I'm thinking more of the hereafter rather than here."

Ambiga, meanwhile, said she will follow through on the Bersih People's Tribunal on the 13th general election, from which a full report is expected early next year.

"We have a plan of action for what happens after the report," she added.

The Bersih People's Tribunal was held in September and heard evidence from members of the public on election fraud and irregularities during the 13th general election.

Bersih was officially launched on November 23 2006 and re-launched as Bersih 2.0 in 2010, when Ambiga and Samad were chosen as co-chairpersons. - November 12, 2013.

Ketua Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Pahang SAC Mohd Zakaria Ahmad yang mengesahkan kejadian itu berkata, tiga suspek lelaki dipercayai terbabit dalam kejadian.

Ketiga-tiga suspek itu dipercayai melarikan diri dengan menaiki sebuah kereta jenis Proton Wira Aeroback berwarna putih selepas menambak mangsa.

Beliau berkata, polis masih menyiasat kejadian itu.

Sebelum ini Raflie dikatakan begitu giat menggeledah tempat-tempat ajaran sesat dan Syiah seluruh negeri Pahang.

Woman assaulted by husband in lift wants police to act fast

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The woman who was assaulted by her husband in the presence of their two young children in the lift of a private hospital in Bandar Perda, here, hopes the police will act fast against the man.

The 36-year-old woman who lodged a police report on Aug 12 following the incident, said she was worried her husband would act more violently and hoped that police would detain him.

The woman, who lives separately from her husband who she claimed had married another woman in 2011, said she suffered pain and bruises from being repeatedly slapped and kicked by her husband, from whom she was seeking divorce.

She and her estranged husband had separately gone to the hospital to visit their eldest child, aged nine, who was warded there for high fever when they had an argument in the lift and he then assaulted her.

The woman, a factory worker, said she did not expect so many people to react to the video recording on the incident which was uploaded by her younger brother video to YouTube.

The brother, Mohd Yunus Ahmad Ramli, 31, said he uploaded the video clip of his sister being assaulted to YouTube and shared on Facebook after it was sent to him by his elder brother and hoped police would take further action.    

Following the incident, Penang police are looking for a public servant seen in the closed-circuit television camera recording assaulting his wife in the lift of a private hospital in Bukit Mertajam on Monday.

Bullet narrowly misses Kuantan woman in car

KUANTAN: THE decision by a 35-year-old divorcee to stop her car to make a call yesterday morning almost cost  her life.

However, Ruzelawati Basri, who was shot by an unknown assailant while seated inside her multi-purpose-vehicle, escaped with minor injuries in the 4am incident.

She received outpatient treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here.

Ruzelawati, who runs an optical shop here, was fortunate that the bullet did not hit her and instead pierced the driver's side window. She suffered cuts on her right eye from the glass fragments.

The incident unfolded when the mother of four, who had just filled petrol, stopped in front of a restaurant in Jalan Haji Ahmad, about 50m from the petrol kiosk, to call her former husband, who is in Putrajaya.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said Ruzelawati was shocked when she saw a man, who had pulled up in a blue car, pointing a pistol at the driver's side windscreen.

"The man knocked on the window and told her to open the door. Fearing for her safety, the victim tried to speed off when she heard the sound of glass shattering.

"She panicked and drove for about 200m before stopping in front of a 24-hour restaurant."

Ruzelawati remained in the vehicle for more than an hour before seeking help from people in the restaurant.

It is learnt that a restaurant worker and several customers helped Ruzelawati. who lives in Lorong Sekilau here, to alert the police before sending her to hospital.

Jasmani said police would record a statement from her ex-husband, whom she divorced several months ago, as well as her workers.

"It could be a car-jacking attempt but we have not ruled out business rivalry and robbery. We will obtain the closed-circuit television camera footage from the petrol station.

"Besides the driver's side window, the bullet had also hit the vehicle's front passenger door panel," he said, adding that the incident was the first in the state capital here this year.

On July 25, a lorry driver from the Temerloh Area Farmers Organisation was injured in the arm when he was shot at a traffic-light junction near Felda Jenderak in Kuala Krau, Temerloh. The victim's lorry was earlier involved in an accident with another vehicle.

It was learnt that the car driver had trailed the lorry before firing two shots at the victim.

NON-SPORTING EVENTS: Delay in removing coverings over pitch causes grass to die at National Stadium

KUALA LUMPUR: CONCERTS and other non-sportsrelated events are a big part of the reason the pitch at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil is in bad condition.

Stadium staff said even though special coverings are used for the grass, the pitch was still affected.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, these staff members said one of the main reasonswas because the coverings were not removed quickly enough.

One said Malaysia Stadium Corporation (MSC) had a strict rule that these coverings had to be used.

“But once a concert or event ends, the coverings are not removed quickly.

"Most of the time, by the time they are removed, the grass would have turned yellow and will have little time to recover. These areas then turn into bald patches."

 He put the blame on the organisers of such events as they were the ones responsible for removing the covering.

Another member of    staff  said the next non-sporting event at the National Stadium was a concert  on  Monday.

Glancing around the stadium, the NST team at first did not notice anything wrong with the pitch.

But walking a little closer, the imperfections become  obvious.

There were  sandy bald spots and uneven areas, clearly in need of returfing. The last major returfing was in 2006.

 Malaysia Stadium Corporation  chief executive officer Ahmad Halmi Harun declined  to comment.

"My chairman (Datuk Rozabil Abdul Rahman) will hold a tell-all press conference on Wednesday. We will keep the media informed."

The condition of the National Stadium's field came under scrutiny when Spanish Primera Liga team Barcelona refused to play against the the Malaysian team  there. The  match was switched to the Shah Alam Stadium at the last minute.

It was reported that three Barcelona players were injured while training at the National Stadium on Friday, among them,   Lionel Messi.

The pitch was last returfed for the AFC Asian Cup. A year earlier, the original Bermuda grass was replaced by seashore marino paspalum (salt-tolerant warm season grass).

This is not the first time the pitch  has been criticised. Organisers of the exhibition match between the national team and English club Chelsea  decided to hold the match at Shah Alam Stadium as well, purportedly because the National Stadium pitch was in a bad condition.

In 2002,  four years after the stadium was dedicated,  Brazil    coach Luiz Felipe Scolari commented that the friendly match against Malaysia was akin to a "beach soccer match".

In June, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin ordered MSC to close the football field for six months from October  for repairs.

Khairy said the field did not meet international standards and that the criteria for using the stadium would be tightened.

Sekeping nota tulisan Allahyarham Umi Kalthum yang menyatakan lima syarat

KUALA LUMPUR: Sekeping nota tulisan Allahyarham Umi Kalthum yang menyatakan lima syarat ditemui ketika ahli keluarga itu dihimpit rasa duka akibat kematian pelakon veteran tersebut pada Rabu.

Nota yang diletakkan di atas meja solek, rumah salah seorang anak Allahyarham hasil perkahwinan pertamanya antara lain menyenaraikan barang keperluan yang disimpan dan perlu digunakan sekiranya dia meninggal dunia.

Cucu dari suami pertama Allahyarham iaitu Amir Noor Muhamad , 32, berkata, dia menemui nota tersebut ketika masuk ke bilik untuk mencari kain kapan yang disimpan Allahyarham sebagai wasiat.

“Saya terkejut apabila saya masuk ke bilik, saya terjumpa sekeping nota yang arwah letakkan di atas meja mekap.

"Dia seolah-olah sudah tahu hendak pergi buat selama-lamanya,” jelas Amir Noor kepadamStar Online di sini pada Rabu.

Allahyarham Umi Kalthum meninggal dunia pada usia 81 tahun dalam tidur kira-kira pukul 4 pagi di rumah anak hasil perkahwinan pertamanya dengan individu yang dikenali sebagai Jaafar di Ukay Prima di sini pada Rabu.

Beliau meninggalkan lapan orang anak, 22 orang cucu serta seorang cicit hasil dua perkahwinannya termasuklah dengan pelakon Datuk S Roomai Noor.

S Roomai Noor meninggal dunia di Mekah ketika menunaikan umrah pada 16 Mac 1996 akibat paru-paru berair.

Selain aktres Noorkumalasari, Allahyarham Umi Kalthum turut memiliki seorang anak tiri iaitu penyanyi Anita Sarawak hasil perkahwinan terdahulu S Roomai Noor dengan pelakon Siput Sarawak.

Dalam pada itu Amir Noor berkata, lima perkara yang dicatatkan oleh neneknya itu ialah kelengkapan bagi menguruskan jenazahnya iaitu; kain batik untuk menutup dan memandikan jenazah, dua helai kain ihram termasuk milik S Roomai Noor sebagai kain kapan dan selendang putih menutup muka.

Turut ditulis ialah sarung bantal bagi kegunaan melapik kepala jenazah dan dua helai kain putih yang perlu diikat pada batu dan diletakkan di simpang jalan sebagai tanda ada orang meninggal dunia.

Kesemua kelengkapan jenazah itu disimpan rapi dalam sebuah almari dan digunakan sebagai memenuhi impiannya.

Allahyarham juga turut berpesan agar mengebumikan

jenazahnya di Tanah Perkuburan Islam Klang Gate, Hulu Klang di sini iaitu berdekatan dengan kubur arwah ibunya.

’KONGSI’ CONCEPT: Each side has to sacrifice something so that the other can gain something

IN response to the emergence of a Malay political party,  Umno and its success in rejecting the British inspired Malayan Union, the Chinese community of the 1940s saw the need for a political party of their own to present their views to the British government.

Thus was the MCA conceived and born, led by Malacca's Sir Cheng-Lock Tan. Although it was intended to counter the influence of Umno and protect the interests of the Chinese community, events changed the strategy and role of the MCA.

In 1952 the Kuala Lumpur Umno leaders and the Kuala Lumpur MCA branch leaders decided that in the Kuala Lumpur municipal elections, they should not contest against each other, but instead should support each other's candidates in their respective constituencies.

The results startled them as they defeated almost all the non-racial parties. Realising the political advantage of cooperating with each other the Tunku (Abdul Rahman) and Sir Cheng-Lock Tan, and senior leaders of the MCA and Umno decided to formalise their cooperation by setting up the Alliance, a coalition of MCA and Umno.

The basis of this coalition was the idea of supporting each other and sharing the power gained. Buoyed by the success of the Alliance party in the 1955 elections, in which the MIC had joined, the Tunku looked more kindly at the proposal of Sir Cheng-Lock that citizenship should be based on jus soli (citizenship by being born in the country) and not jus saguinis (citizenship based on the Malaysian citizenship of the father or mother, i.e. citizenship based on blood relation).

The Tunku did not quite agree but he nevertheless decided to give one million citizenships to unqualified Chinese and Indians.

With that the confrontation between the Chinese and the Malays changed into positive cooperation.

It was a classic kongsi that was set up. The essence is an undertaking to share. Sharing involves a give and take arrangement, in which each side has to sacrifice something so that the other can gain something.

As the Malays made up the majority of the citizens they naturally led the Alliance. But the Chinese and Indians were not without adequate power. In any case Malay political power would be mitigated by Chinese and Indians' voting and economic power.

The Tunku saw immediate benefit from the "kongsi" as he believed Malays only wanted to be government employees and the Chinese wanted to be in business. There would be no conflict or tussle between them.

The Indians would fill up the professional posts. He did not foresee the days when government could not create enough jobs for the greatly increased number of Malays.

The kongsi Alliance worked well. But in 1963 Singapore joined Malaysia.

 Immediately the PAP tried to gain Chinese support by condemning the Alliance kongsi for being disadvantageous to the Chinese.  Malaysians, said the PAP, were not equal.  There should be a Malaysian Malaysia where all the benefits should be based on merit alone, with the best taking everything, irrespective of race.

Without saying so in so many words the PAP was inferring that the Malays did not deserve their positions. The best people should rule the country. In the eyes of the PAP, Singapore was ruled by the best qualified people. That they happen to be almost all Chinese is incidental.

In the 1964 elections the MCA and Malaysian Chinese generally valued their cooperation with the Malays. They rejected the PAP and its chauvinistic appeal, giving it only one seat.

The Tunku realised what the PAP was up to and decided that Singapore should not be a part of Malaysia. But the PAP was not done. The remnant of the party in Malaysia set up the DAP to carry on the Malaysian Malaysia meritocratic formula for undermining Chinese support for the MCA.

Harping continuously on the so-called Malay privileges and the unfairness to the Chinese, the DAP slowly eroded the idea of kongsi in the multi-racial coalition of the Barisan Nasional.

Despite the fact that the Barisan Nasional supported Chinese education and the use of the Chinese language, the DAP convinced many Chinese that the Chinese, their culture and language are not given proper treatment by the Barisan Nasional coalition.

The MCA was attacked for not doing enough for the Chinese.

Realising the political advantage of cooperating with each other, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Sir Cheng-Lock Tan and senior leaders of MCA and Umno decided to formalise their cooperation by setting up the Alliance, a coalition of MCA and Umno.
