Sarawak is uneasy following covert religious conversion attempts of
non-Muslim students by a Muslim NGO from the peninsula, said the state's
outspoken minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing (pic) .
The students were said to have been placed under an "Anak Angkat" (adoption) programme run by the NGO at a school in Kuching.
Masing today demanded the state Education Department investigate how the NGO could conduct its dubious programme in a school without the knowledge of the school's authorities.
“I want to know what NGO is that. How did they gatecrash into the school?
"Since the school principal was not even aware of the programme in the school, I assume the programme is not sanctioned by the school or the education department,” Masing said after meeting a group of concerned parents of students from SMK Balai Ringin, a school situated about 65km from Kuching.
He said the NGO was never given permission to use the school hall for the “Anak Angkat” programme.
Masing suspected the programme, held every Saturday since March 8, was a covert attempt to convert the students.
He also demanded the Public Service Commission investigate allegations by the students' parents that two teachers from the school had aided the group in conducting the programme.
The students claimed the two teachers had coaxed them to attend the programme under the guise of it being a “co-curriculum” activity.
“How could religious topics like the difference between 'air zam zam' which Muslims believe in, and the holy water Christians believe in, and questioning the sainthood of Mother Teresa be discussed, if this is a school sanctioned programme?” Masing asked.
Masing, who voiced his concerns by the “aggressive attempts” by Islamic groups from the peninsula to proselytise Christians in the state, said such groups are sowing discord among the state's multi-racial and multi-religious society as they have “no respect for other people's religious belief”.
“They are creating uneasiness in Sarawak,” he added.
Masing said if non-Muslims could not, by law, attempt to convert Muslims to another religion, on the same token Muslims too should not attempt to convert non-Muslims to Islam.
“How can we have two rules in one nation?”
The Land Development Minister, already vocal against covert attempts at proselytising to Christians, vowed to protect Sarawak as “the last bastion of religious harmony” for as long as he lived.
“Do not disturb us,” he warned the religious groups.
Last month, Masing had highlighted how Sarawak Christian students attending Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) scholarship interviews were asked questions about Islam.
He said the students were asked to name the prophets of Islam, the rukun (precepts) of Islamic prayers, and their opinion on the controversial hudud law, among others.
Subsequently, Mara clarified that non-Muslims attending the interview were to be asked questions on moral issues while promising to investigate the officials who had asked the applicants questions on Islam. – May 14, 2014.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5:
The High Court today dismissed an application by Sidang Injil Borneo
(SIB) for leave for a judicial review to challenge a Home Ministry order
prohibiting the import of Christian books containing the word “Allah”.
Court rejects bid over import of Christian books with the word ‘Allah’
Written By Unknown on Monday, 12 May 2014 | 05:55
Justice Datuk Zaleha Yusof
ruled that the High Court was bound by the Court of Appeal’s decision
that the word ‘Allah’ is not an integral part of faith and practices of
Christianity, reported Bernama.
In her judgement, which was
read out by Senior Assistant Registrar N. Arun in chambers, Zaleha said
the court had no choice but to refer to the Court Of Appeal’s decision
in the case of the Home Ministry against the Roman Catholic Church
involving a prohibition on the use of the word “Allah” in its ‘Herald’
weekly publication.
“So, although the decision,
was particular to the weekly Herald, all the learned judges held that
the word “Allah” is not an integral part of faith and practices of
Christianity and, therefore, the prohibition by the minister is not
unconstitutional.
“As long the decision stands,
the doctrine of ‘stare decisis’ (precedent), this court is bound by the
decision of the superior court,” she said.
She said the court dismissed the application with no order as to costs.
On Dec 10, 2007, SIB and its
president, Rev Jerry W. A. Dusing alias Jerry W. Patel, filed a leave
application for a judicial review against the Home Ministry and the
government to challenge the Customs Department’s seizure of its books
brought in from Surabaya, Indonesia, at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal in
Sepang on Aug 15, 2007.
The books were, however, returned to the church on Jan 25, 2008.
They had sought a declaration
that they had the constitutional right to use the word “Allah” in all
their religious publications and practices, and not just within the
church.
Lawyer Lim Heng Seng represented the church and Dusing while senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan acted for the government.

Police tackling murder case from all angles
Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 12 November 2013 | 18:15
ALL EYES ON 'TUHAN HARUN': No previous record of violence among deviant groups, says Jakim
AUTHORITIES working round the clock to solve the murder of Pahang Islamic Religious Department (Jaip) enforcement head Ahmad Rafli Abdul Malek believe they could be looking at a deviant sect operating on a whole new level.
Senior Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) enforcement officers, who refused to be named, said in the history of deviant groups in the country, no followers had ever carried weapons or used them to commit crimes.
Although police had not linked the murder to any deviant teachings, they did not rule out the involvement of the outlawed "Tuhan Harun" sect in the case.
Investigators said they could not confirm that "Tuhan Harun" members were not armed. It is not known what ideology the sect, led by Harun Mat Saat, follows.
Religious enforcement officers also revealed that none of the deviant groups they probed in the past were involved in terrorist activities.
In the incident on Sunday, Ahmad Rafli was taking down curtains at his home in Indera Mahkota 2, Kuantan, when a car with three men inside pulled up outside. As he was giving the salam (greeting) to the men, one of whom was wearing a kopiah (skull cap), one of them pulled out a gun and shot him three times. Two shots hit the chest, killing him instantly.
Colleagues said he was a "no-nonsense" enforcement chief who regularly conducted raids on entertainment outlets. He was to said to have led the Jaip team to the eventual smashing of the "Tuhan Harun" sect in the state and the arrest of 31 of its members.
However, there have been no record of the victim receiving any threats.
After a task force meeting on Monday, police put together a photofit of one of the three suspects involved in the case.
Investigators believe it is 70 per cent accurate.
The wanted poster of the suspect depicts a stocky Malay man in his 50s.
State police chief Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said police had yet to identify the second suspect, believed to have been the shooter, or a third suspect, who was driving the getaway car, a white Proton Wira Aeroback.
He denied claims that the suspects' car had been found in Pekan, but confirmed that the vehicle had been spotted near the victim's house before the incident.
Sharifuddin said police were monitoring information in cyberspace closely and recorded the statements of several individuals.
Several "Tuhan Harun" followers had their statements recorded at the district police station yesterday.
One of them, identified only as Rahim, refuted claims that they were a militant or extremist group as they had never been taught to take revenge, show hatred or use violence.
"I was a follower for over a year and most of our activities involved playing music, singing divine songs and giving love. We would never kill an innocent human being and we were not angered by Jaip's arrest of 31 of the group's members," said the 46-year-old.
Ahmad (not his real name), 30, expressed shock over Rafli's murder and refuted claims that "Tuhan Harun" followers were behind it.
"I'm saddened by the incident and that is the reason I came forward to help in the investigation."
Ahmad said he had left the movement and had never contacted Harun since.
Rahim and Ahmad both said they did not recognise the person in the police photofit.
Sharifuddin said while investigators had urged members of "Tuhan Harun" to surrender, their probe into the case also would cover other angles. He advised those with information to contact investigation officer Assistant Superintendent Zukri Muhammad at 013-9764999, or the nearest police station.

Pakatan MP ejected over temple issueSPEAKER SAYS 'NO': Opposition MPs walk out over alleged demolition of Hindu temple Read more: Pakatan MP ejected over temple issue SPEAKER SAYS 'NO': Opposition MPs walk out over alleged demolition of Hindu temple
OPPOSITION members of parliament staged a walkout yesterday after Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia directed N. Surendran to be ejected from the Dewan Rakyat.
The PKR MP from Padang Serai was ordered out after he insisted on pushing through an emergency motion to debate the alleged demolition of the Sri Munes-warar Kaliyaman temple in Jalan P. Ramlee.
The drama unfolded in the morning session when Surendran submitted the motion to condemn City Hall's actions.
However, Pandikar Amin rejected the motion on technical grounds, explaining that Surendran had submitted the motion under Standing Orders 18(1), where it was supposed to have the word 'discussed'.
"Instead, your motion has the word 'condemn', and you want Parliament to decide on the matter," Pandikar said, adding that he had checked with Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor on the issue and the latter had clarified that the inside of the temple was left untouched, as only the structure around it was torn down.
"Don't drag me into issues with a political agenda as I will be viewed as an irresponsible speaker.
"This is a sensitive issue and I have to base my decision on facts," he said, adding that Surendran should respect his decision.
However, Surendran refused to budge and other Pakatan MPs soon joined in the shouting match. Surendran walked out of Parliament at 11.30am.
Speaking at Parliament lobby later, Surendran questioned Pandikar's conduct, calling him "undemocratic, biased and outrageous".

Christian leaders in Sabah and Sarawak have vowed to carry on using the word Allah even if it meant being prosecuted under a Home Ministry directive allowed by a court ruling.
Christian leaders harden stand on Allah, say Putrajaya misleading East Malaysians on court ruling
They also accused Putrajaya of trying to mislead Christians from East Malaysia into believing that the Court of Appeal ruling was only applicable to the Catholic weekly, Herald.
They said they will speak up on this issue as this is what their respective congregations expected them to do.
In Sarawak today, the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) will hold a public forum to address the use of the word Allah as it "relates to religious freedom". The forum will address the legal implications of the Court of Appeal ruling, on whether the decision only affects the use of the word in the Herald in Peninsular Malaysia.
Catholic Bishop for the Keningau diocese in Sabah Datuk Cornelius Piong said Sabahans, especially the Kadazan, Dusun and Murut natives, have been using the word for generations and will continue doing so.
"Who is going to stop us? Even God allows us to use the word," he said, calling the move to restrict the use of the word illogical.
His conviction was supported by the Bishop for the Sandakan diocese, Datuk Julius Dusin Gitom, who said that whatever views the church leaders expressed reflected the congregation's feelings.
"We will continue to use the word until they prosecute us," he said.
Gitom also took to task government leaders for "hiding" the real extent of the ruling by saying that the Court of Appeal ruling was limited to the Herald.
"It is not the case and the people know that. It is a blanket ban which affects everyone."
He also accused political parties Umno and PAS of trying to outdo each other in being more Islamic, which he added was a contributor to the Allah problem.
Gitom said some Catholics in rural areas who had no access to information were being told by certain political leaders that there was nothing to worry about, and that it was only a problem for the Herald.
"These politicians are giving Catholics the wrong facts of what is really happening. That is when we step in to explain to them our rights as Christians," Gitom added.
Piong also lashed out at ministers from Sabah who were not speaking up on the issue.
"We are not too happy about it, they are supposed to represent us, they should speak out but they are too quiet."
Piong said that the congregation would continue to use the word, and added: "What can they do, they will have to sew our mouths to stop us."
Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) Sabah president Reverend Datuk Jerry Dusing said its members felt cheated over the way in which the government was handling religious issues.
He said that although most of SIB's 300,000 members throughout the country were made up of natives of Sabah and Sarawak living in the interiors, they understood what was happening, even though they did not say much about it in public.
"They may not be able to articulate exactly how they feel, mostly due to lack of confidence, but I visit them in the interiors, and they know what is happening.
"They know the problems they face, in relation to their children being 'converted' to Islam in their identity cards and also losing their native lands. This, they said, is all linked to the government's handling of religious issues," said Dusing.
He claimed there were so many cases where Christian parents were surprised that their children were listed as Muslim in their identity cards.
Dusing also took to task politicians who were trying to play down the issue by saying the ruling was limited to the Herald and would not affect Sabah and Sarawak, pointing out instead that the Court of Appeal judgement had defined that the word Allah was not integral to the Christian faith.
"So let us not be fooled that this is only about Herald and Allah. The judgment is far reaching. How can it then not apply to Sabah and Sarawak? And that is why we are throwing our support behind the Catholic Church in its appeal,” Dusing added.
The Christian community in Sarawak said the forum today is being held to inform and educate Bumiputera Christians who are affected by the court ruling.
ACS secretary-general Ambrose Linang said the forum will discuss the historical context behind the formation of Malaysia and the promises leading to the Malaysia Agreement.
"We will also go into the history of the Malay bible translation, that Allah is an integral part of the Christian faith among the native Christians of Sarawak," said Linang.
"The forum will also discuss the use of Allah in the Malay language bible and Christian publications, and that the use of the word must extend to Christians in the peninsula, based on freedom of religion for all Malaysians.
"The premise is that Article 11 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion for everyone and that it does not say one set of freedom for Sabah and Sarawak and another set of freedom for West Malaysia," he said in a statement.
Speakers at the forum will include lawyer Lim Heng Seng, who will speak on the constitution and religious freedom, Dr Ng Kam Weng, who will address the theological and historical perspective of the use of the word Allah, and Professor Dr Jayum Jawan, on the role of churches in nation building.
On October 14, the Court of Appeal ruled that the word Allah was not an integral part of the Christian faith and practice, where the three-man bench saw no reason for the church to remain adamant in wanting to use the name Allah.
They also said that allowing Christians to use Allah would lead to confusion within the Muslim community.
The ruling drew the attention of Muslim scholars from the international arena who warned that the prohibition of the word could push a progressive country like Malaysia backward. – November 13, 2013.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — Prominent lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said that Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma)’s attempt to paint her as a “mastermind” behind a human rights coalition is “very mischievous”, saying that she will seek legal advice over the Islamist group’s claim.
Ambiga says Isma’s claim ‘mischievous’, will seek legal advice
When asked about Isma’s accusation, Ambiga clarified that she was not involved in the report prepared by Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the Universal Periodic Review Process (Comango).
“I have nothing whatsoever to do with Comango report. Very mischievous,” the co-chairman of polls reform group Bersih replied in a text message to The Malay Mail Online.
“As to Isma, I am seeking legal advice as they have maligned me extensively by naming me in leaflets,” she added, referring to the flyers in which Isma had named her as one of the individuals behind Comango.
On Friday, Isma distributed 70,000 leaflets at mosques throughout the country after Friday prayers that slammed Comango for calling for the freedom to renounce Islam; the protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) rights; the removal of Malay privileges; the freedom to embrace Syiah teachings; and the right for Catholics to refer to God as “Allah”, among others.
The Islamist activist group also named Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and several others as Comango’s masterminds, besides claiming that 54 “anti-Islam” non-government organisations supported the movement.
Last night, Marina demanded that Isma rescind its “defamatory” allegation linking her to Comango or face legal action over the claim.
Marina, the eldest daughter of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, described Isma’s allegation that she was one of the masterminds behind Comango as “wholly untrue”.
“Although I am a board member of Sisters in Islam, one of the NGOs in the coalition, I was not involved in any way in the Comango process.
“Therefore I view this allegation by Isma as defamatory and demand that Isma and its office bearers withdraw it immediately with a public clarification in all media, including social media, on my terms. Failure to do so will result in my taking legal action against them,” Marina wrote in a brief statement in reply to The Malay Mail Online’s query.
Marina also said the republication of Isma’s claims by news agencies was also “defamatory”, adding that legal action will be taken if they did not publish her clarification.
Isma has been at the forefront of attempts to discredit Comango, which has also come under fire from other Muslim activists here who claim the group’s human rights recommendations to the United Nations ran counter to the “true” teachings of Islam and the sovereignty of the Federal Constitution.
Isma, which has since signed on with a coalition of Muslim NGOs called MuslimUPRo, also accused Comango of attempting to spread “liberalism teachings” backed by Western powers.
Comango countered that their report was merely an effort to encourage Malaysia to prove its commitment towards improving the lot of all Malaysians via the UPR.

Krisis kemanusiaan Syiria
![]() |
