Sarawak leader demands explanation over covert attempts to convert Christian students

Sarawak is uneasy following covert religious conversion attempts of
non-Muslim students by a Muslim NGO from the peninsula, said the state's
outspoken minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing (pic) .
The students were said to have been placed under an "Anak Angkat" (adoption) programme run by the NGO at a school in Kuching.
Masing today demanded the state Education Department investigate how the NGO could conduct its dubious programme in a school without the knowledge of the school's authorities.
"Since the school principal was not even aware of the programme in the school, I assume the programme is not sanctioned by the school or the education department,” Masing said after meeting a group of concerned parents of students from SMK Balai Ringin, a school situated about 65km from Kuching.
He said the NGO was never given permission to use the school hall for the “Anak Angkat” programme.
If non-Muslims could not, by law, attempt to convert Muslims to another religion, on the same token Muslims too should not attempt to convert non-Muslims to Islam. – James MasingThe parents had complained that the programme, attended by mostly non-Muslim students, had all its talks conducted by “ustaz” (religious teachers) who talked about Islamic religious matters to the Christian students.
Masing suspected the programme, held every Saturday since March 8, was a covert attempt to convert the students.
He also demanded the Public Service Commission investigate allegations by the students' parents that two teachers from the school had aided the group in conducting the programme.
The students claimed the two teachers had coaxed them to attend the programme under the guise of it being a “co-curriculum” activity.
“How could religious topics like the difference between 'air zam zam' which Muslims believe in, and the holy water Christians believe in, and questioning the sainthood of Mother Teresa be discussed, if this is a school sanctioned programme?” Masing asked.
Masing, who voiced his concerns by the “aggressive attempts” by Islamic groups from the peninsula to proselytise Christians in the state, said such groups are sowing discord among the state's multi-racial and multi-religious society as they have “no respect for other people's religious belief”.
“They are creating uneasiness in Sarawak,” he added.
Masing said if non-Muslims could not, by law, attempt to convert Muslims to another religion, on the same token Muslims too should not attempt to convert non-Muslims to Islam.
“How can we have two rules in one nation?”
The Land Development Minister, already vocal against covert attempts at proselytising to Christians, vowed to protect Sarawak as “the last bastion of religious harmony” for as long as he lived.
“Do not disturb us,” he warned the religious groups.
Last month, Masing had highlighted how Sarawak Christian students attending Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) scholarship interviews were asked questions about Islam.
He said the students were asked to name the prophets of Islam, the rukun (precepts) of Islamic prayers, and their opinion on the controversial hudud law, among others.
Subsequently, Mara clarified that non-Muslims attending the interview were to be asked questions on moral issues while promising to investigate the officials who had asked the applicants questions on Islam. – May 14, 2014.

ALL EYES ON 'TUHAN HARUN': No previous record of violence among deviant groups, says Jakim
AUTHORITIES working round the clock to solve the murder of Pahang Islamic Religious Department (Jaip) enforcement head Ahmad Rafli Abdul Malek believe they could be looking at a deviant sect operating on a whole new level.
Senior Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) enforcement officers, who refused to be named, said in the history of deviant groups in the country, no followers had ever carried weapons or used them to commit crimes.
Although police had not linked the murder to any deviant teachings, they did not rule out the involvement of the outlawed "Tuhan Harun" sect in the case.
Investigators said they could not confirm that "Tuhan Harun" members were not armed. It is not known what ideology the sect, led by Harun Mat Saat, follows.
Religious enforcement officers also revealed that none of the deviant groups they probed in the past were involved in terrorist activities.
In the incident on Sunday, Ahmad Rafli was taking down curtains at his home in Indera Mahkota 2, Kuantan, when a car with three men inside pulled up outside. As he was giving the salam (greeting) to the men, one of whom was wearing a kopiah (skull cap), one of them pulled out a gun and shot him three times. Two shots hit the chest, killing him instantly.
Colleagues said he was a "no-nonsense" enforcement chief who regularly conducted raids on entertainment outlets. He was to said to have led the Jaip team to the eventual smashing of the "Tuhan Harun" sect in the state and the arrest of 31 of its members.
However, there have been no record of the victim receiving any threats.
After a task force meeting on Monday, police put together a photofit of one of the three suspects involved in the case.
Investigators believe it is 70 per cent accurate.
The wanted poster of the suspect depicts a stocky Malay man in his 50s.
State police chief Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said police had yet to identify the second suspect, believed to have been the shooter, or a third suspect, who was driving the getaway car, a white Proton Wira Aeroback.
He denied claims that the suspects' car had been found in Pekan, but confirmed that the vehicle had been spotted near the victim's house before the incident.
Sharifuddin said police were monitoring information in cyberspace closely and recorded the statements of several individuals.
Several "Tuhan Harun" followers had their statements recorded at the district police station yesterday.
One of them, identified only as Rahim, refuted claims that they were a militant or extremist group as they had never been taught to take revenge, show hatred or use violence.
"I was a follower for over a year and most of our activities involved playing music, singing divine songs and giving love. We would never kill an innocent human being and we were not angered by Jaip's arrest of 31 of the group's members," said the 46-year-old.
Ahmad (not his real name), 30, expressed shock over Rafli's murder and refuted claims that "Tuhan Harun" followers were behind it.
"I'm saddened by the incident and that is the reason I came forward to help in the investigation."
Ahmad said he had left the movement and had never contacted Harun since.
Rahim and Ahmad both said they did not recognise the person in the police photofit.
Sharifuddin said while investigators had urged members of "Tuhan Harun" to surrender, their probe into the case also would cover other angles. He advised those with information to contact investigation officer Assistant Superintendent Zukri Muhammad at 013-9764999, or the nearest police station.

Pengikut 'Tuhan Harun' ditahan
KUANTAN- Sebuah premis di tingkat satu bangunan rumah kedai di Jalan Bukit Ubi di sini dipercayai dijadikan pejabat operasi kumpulan ajaran sesat diketuai seorang lelaki Harun Mat Saat, 46 atau 'Tuhan Harun' yang ditahan penguat kuasa Jabatan Agama Islam Pahang (Jaip) bersama 30 pengikutnya, 5 April lalu.Kira-kira jam 3.30 petang semalam, kelihatan beberapa pegawai penguat kuasa Jaip menyerbu premis tersebut dan menahan seorang lelaki berusia dalam lingkungan 30-an disyaki anggota kumpulan ajaran sesat itu.
Menurut sumber, hasil serbuan ke atas premis itu, pihak Jaip menemui dan merampas pelbagai bahan bercetak yang boleh dikaitkan dengan ajaran kumpulan terbabit.
“Berdasarkan kandungan bahan bercetak itu, kita percaya isi kandungannya jelas bercanggah dengan ajaran Islam dan dipercayai untuk diedarkan kepada pengikut,” katanya.
Sumber itu juga memaklumkan, selain dijadikan pejabat operasi, premis itu juga digunakan sebagai tempat mencetak risalah berkaitan ajaran Tuhan Harun atau Tuhan 2013 untuk diedarkan kepada ahli.
“Dalam pemeriksaan itu, kelihatan sebuah mesin pencetak yang dipercayai digunakan untuk mencelah risalah turut dirampas,” katanya.
Pegawai Jaip bagaimana pun gagal dihubungi untuk mengesahkan berhubung serbuan dan rampasan tersebut.
Harun yang dipercayai tersenarai sebagai individu paling dikehendaki Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) kerana terbabit dalam beberapa siri kes penipuan sejak 2010 ditahan ketika menjalani ritual songsang di sebuah premis, Lorong Pandan Damai, di sini, kira-kira jam 6.30 petang 5 April lalu.
Berdasarkan laporan akhbar sebelum ini, lelaki itu sudah merekrut lebih 100 pengikut terdiri daripada pelbagai lapisan umur dan latar belakang termasuk doktor dan ahli perniagaan.
Kumpulan terbabit dikatakan mengamalkan ajaran sesat dengan melakukan ritual bermain muzik secara ‘live band’ setiap kali pertemuan diadakan pada waktu senja.
Pada 9 April lalu, Harun dihadapkan ke Mahkamah Majistret Kuantan atas tuduhan menipu kontraktor membabitkan pembelian saham di sebuah pusat komersial di Sungai Buluh, Selangor membabitkan kerugian RM200,000.
Dia mengaku tidak bersalah dan dibebaskan dengan jaminan RM7,000 bagaimana pun tidak dapat dipastikan sama ada Harun menjelaskan jaminan tersebut atau berada dalam tahanan reman di Penjara Penor.

Court nullifies conversion of three minors by father

IPOH: In a landmark decision, the High Court yesterday nullified the conversion of three minors by their Muslim convert father more than four years ago.
Judicial commissioner Lee Swee Seng, who delivered the judgment, said the conversions of Tevi Darsiny, 16, Karan Dinish, 15, and Prasana Diksa, 5, were unlawful.
Their names after conversions were Umu Salamah, Abu Bakar and Umu Habibah.
Their father, Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah, whose Hindu name before conversion was K. Patmanathan, converted them in April 2009 and then obtained certificates of conversion from the Perak Islamic Religious Department to show his Hindu wife, M. Indira Gandhi, as proof of conversion.
Indira then filed an application the same year to seek the nullification of the conversion on the basis that the conversions contravened the Administration of the Religion of Islam (Perak) Enactment 2004 and other laws, including the Federal Constitution.
She named as respondents the Perak Registrar of Converts (Pendaftar Mualaf), Perak Islamic Religious Department, Perak government, the Education Ministry, the Federal Government and Ridzuan.
Indira was represented by K. Shanmuga, M. Kulasegaran and N. Selvam. The first three respondents were represented by assistant state legal adviser Norazura Mokhtar, who also mentioned for the fourth and fifth respondents. Counsel Hatim Musa represented Ridzuan.
In his judgement, Lee said the conversions were null and void because the minors were not present before religious officials to utter the declaration of faith (kalimah syahadah) as required by the enactment.
"Although they are children, like those who have attained the age 18, they have to utter the declaration of faith in person (at the Perak Islamic Religious Department) before certificates of conversions could be issued to them.
"It is this court's interpretation that the children had to have expressed their desire to convert to Islam before the conversions could take place," he said referring to Sections 96 and 106 of the Enactment.
Lee said that the High Court of Malaya had superior powers to decide on matters related to conversion.
He also said if the word "parent" were to be taken to mean either father or mother then this would lead to "one parent converting the child today, and another parent converting the child tomorrow and the cycle will continue".
Lee said he believed the framers of the Federal Constitution did not have this in mind when drafting the supreme law of the land.
The court also found that Article 11, which gave every Malaysian religious freedom, included the right to educate and raise children in the religion of their parents.
"This is part of the right to practise other religions in peace and harmony as per Article 3 and part of the right of life and liberty as per Article 5 of the Federal Constitution."
Lee did not make a ruling on cost as he believed the respondents might appeal the decision.
Speaking to reporters after the decision was delivered, Indira, who was accompanied by her mother and another relative, said it was a good decision.
"I have been waiting for nearly five years.
"This is a very very touching moment for me and my kids.
"I am just waiting to deliver the (High Court) decision to them (Tevi Darsiny and Karan Dinish)."
The youngest child, Prasana Diksa, had been taken away by Ridzuan although the High Court had given full custody of all three children to Indira.
He had refused to hand over the child and her whereabouts are not known.

Lee made this decision in allowing Patmanathan’s estranged wife, Indira’s judicial review application to quash the certificate issued by the Perak Religious Department.
The state registrar of conversions, the Perak Religious Department director, the state and federal governments, the education ministry and Patmanathan were named as respondents
Lee allowed the application with no order as to cost.
Indira, 38, a kindergarten teacher, filed a judicial review application in 2009.
Patmanathan, 44, had himself converted to Islam on March 2009 and is now known as Muhammad Ridzuan Abdullah.
He then converted his three children on April 2 the same year.
That same month, the Syariah Court granted him custody of his three children, an order which Indira had challenged in the civil courts.
The High Court subsequently granted Indira an interim order for the custody of their children.
She had claimed that Patmanathan had stormed into her house, had used force against her and their children, Tevi Darsiny, Karan Dinish and Prasana Diksa, who were then aged 12, 11 and one, respectively, before leaving with their birth certificates.
Patmanathan then took away their youngest daughter and until now, the police have failed to locate their whereabouts.
In the decision yesterday, Lee said the certificates were null and void as it was unconstitutional because it was given without hearing the mother or children.
“This was unconstitutional because Articles 3, 5 and 11 of the Federal Constitution state that a mother has an equal right to raise her children to follow her own religion,” he said.
“This decision is no victory for anyone, but we have to learn to live in harmony," said the judicial commissioner.
